Comparison over the years
Back in 1977-78 when the Chessie Steam Special was making its excursion runs over the home rails, ConCor produced a smaller version of the train in N-scale comprised of the locomotive, two tenders (the second being a rolling water tank), and five cars.
One issue with the set was the engine was a 2-8-4 Berkshire, a fine specimen in its own right, but it wasn't the engine that actually pulled the train which was a 4-8-4 Northern. I wished for many a year to get either the proper engine or buy an undecorated one and have someone custom paint it for me.
However, it was not on my list of priorities until this year when Broadway Limited came out with a proper 4-8-4 T-1 Northern and the correct tender. Plus, it has a DCC decoder with sound and smoke!
I put together this collage so you could see the differences between the Berkshire on top, and the Northern on the bottom.
