The fort's ditch

Fort Walem was one of the forts around Antwerp that were built from the middle of the 19th century till 1914. In 1914 German gunfire caused an explosion in the fort that killed 70 Belgian soldiers who are still buried under the ruins. The trees upon and around the fort came only when it had lost its miltary function.
