While the United States and Japan jockeyed peaceably for influence in eastern Asia for many years, the situation changed in 1931. That year Japan took its first step toward building a Japanese empire in eastern Asia by invading Manchuria, a fertile, resource-rich province in northern China
The signal moment in this early phase of the war in China was the capture of Chiang Kai-Shek’s capital, Nanking (Nanjing) in December 1937.
The “Rape of Nanjing,” as it’s gone down in the history books, featured mass rape, yes, but just about every other depredation one human being can visit upon another: murder, beatings, torture, arson, theft—all taking place more or less before the full court of world opinion.
But China had an ally- The United States, and we took steps to come to aid of China, through peaceable measures, like embargoes. Isolationist US avoided international conflict and it's aid was largely ineffectual.
Japan planned their attack on the US for a long time. Then they attacked Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 and thousands of US sailors were murdered. A few days later Japan's allies Germany, and Italy declared war on the US and escalated us into WWll.
