The skylight that runs the length of the Oculus roof. The skylight is opened every year on September 11 or if needed to provide air ventilation.
The Oculus was built to maximize the effects of the autumnal equinox rays (when the sun crosses the celestial equator) that occurs in September.
The roof was originally designed to mechanically open but that design was eliminated due to budget and space constraints.
