The Oculus is the name for the Head House for the WTC hub. Head House is an American term that refers to the part of a subway station that is above ground and may contain escalators, elevators and ticket agents. In New York it is also called a Control House. They were built in certain locations were a kiosk or staircase was not desirable.
The transportation hub terminal was formally renamed as the World Trade Center Transportation Hub or just World Trade Center for short. It was previously known as the PATH (Port Authority Trans-Hudson) Station.
As a transportation hub, it has five tracks, three island platforms and one side platform in a basement four stories underground and was designed to connect various modes of transportation in Lower Manhattan and handled more than 17 million passengers in 2017.
It also has three levels of roughly 365,000 square feet of retail space called the Westfield World Trade Center and was the largest shopping complex in Manhattan when it opened on August 16, 2016. It replaced the original 'Mall at the World Trade Center' that was under WTC 4 and 5 that was destroyed during the 911 attack.
