Der Kölner Dom, erbaut von 1248 bis 1880, gilt als Meisterwerk gotischer Architektur. In der gesamten Bauzeit wurden die originalen Baupläne nicht verändert. Die Architektur des Domes entspricht größtenteils den Plänen des Mittelalters. Einige Bauabschnitte entstanden im neogotischen Stil. Wegen des Umfangs und der Qualität der Arbeiten wurde der Dom zu einem Kristallisationspunkt dieser Architektur. Er wurde 1996 in die Liste des UNESCO-Welterbes eingetragen.
