St. Etienne und die kopflosen Heiligen
Die Kathedrale Saint-Étienne in Sens im französischen Département Yonne (Region Burgund) wurde ab 1140/45 errichtet und gilt damit als erste gotische Kathedrale.
Der Westbau wurde 1190-1220 errichtet.
Während des Bildersturmes der Französischen Revolution 1793 wurden den Skulpturen des Westportals die Köpfe abgeschlagen. Den Gewändefiguren wurden zum Teil auch die Attribute entfernt.
Der Baumeister der Kathedrale „Wilhelm von Sens“ errichtete um 1175 in England in Canterbury den dortigen Chor neu, nachdem dieser abgebrannt war. Somit leitete er die erste englische Phase der Gotik, das Early English, ein.

St. Etienne or St. Stephen was one of the earliest Gothic buildings in France and is the largest of the early Gothic churches. It is a national monument of France. The choir was begun in 1140. As was typical in cathedral construction work progressed westwards, building the nave, with the west front completed around 1200. The structure was finally completed in the 16th century. The architecture of its choir influenced, through the architect William of Sens, that of the choir of Canterbury Cathedral.
The west front is pierced by three portals. That in the middle has sculptures representing the Parable of the Ten Virgins and the story of St Stephen.
Destruction of religious images or sculptures occurred in France during the Frenche Revolution in 1793, in Sens the portal sculptures lost their heads.
