Dammit!
It turns out that the headphone jack on the MacBook Pro is a magnet for small objects. In this case the small object was a silica desiccant gel sphere from a ruptured desiccate package that had ruptured when a laptop bag was being delivered to me. Turns out that the little spheres are just the right size to fit in the jack. To add insult to injury, there are little springs inside the jack to engage the headphone plug. The jack's springs are perfect for holding small objects captive.
