Mullumbimby Now and Then
Civic Centre Comes To Life by Danielle Watson
The facts as I know: Mullumbimby Civic buildings. Town Clock Visible as was built by Hilton Ainsworth and this was where the air raid siren was during WW2.
Date: Era 1950's
The story I imagine
Civic Centre Comes to Life
The town was eerily quiet and deserted as the white cotton ball clouds formed in the distance. The blistering heat of the day was already upon us. I proudly stood chatting to my colleague out the front of my architectural masterpiece. Hours of long hard drawings and planning has finally come to life. The white roman pillars proudly support the angular building.
I am wearing my crisp white Sunday best shirt. As it is the best shirt I own. I am blinking wildly as the sun is glaring into my face. I could smell the rain stirring as the humidity oozed through the air.

This Now and Then photo and story was created in an ABC Open NSW North Coast workshop (abc.net.au/open) in partnership with the Brunswick Valley Historical Society and the Northern Rivers Writers' Centre (NRWC). Courtesy of the NRWC workshop participants were guided through the writing task by author Alan Close who invited the group to imagine themselves into their Then photos. The result is this creative collection of Now and Then "the story as I imagine...."
