Mullumbimby Now and Then
Smells, sights and sounds when the circus train comes to town.
The facts as I know them
A circus drumming up business in Mullumbimby early 1900's
The story as I imagine it
The smell of elephant dung mixes with the aroma of freshly baked bread as the line of circus elephants parades past the Bakery in Burringbar Street Mullumbimby. When the Circus Train arrives the elephants are the first to be unloaded, they then carry the Big Top through town to the Show ground where an army of men set to work erecting it ready for the much anticipated performances. Large circus troops like Ashton's & Bullen's had their own trains travelling the country.

This Now and Then photo and story was created in an ABC Open NSW North Coast workshop (abc.net.au/open) in partnership with the Brunswick Valley Historical Society and the Northern Rivers Writers' Centre (NRWC). Courtesy of the NRWC workshop participants were guided through the writing task by author Alan Close who invited the group to imagine themselves into their Then photos. The result is this creative collection of Now and Then "the story as I imagine...."
