Mullumbimby Now and Then
Olive & Sons Butchers, Stuart St, Mullumbimby by Charlie Sanders
The story as I imagine it
It was close to midday when the car pulled up at A.Olive & Sons Butchers. Its headlights winked in the late morning sun and its windows were down to let some air in while its
driver went to buy some meat from the butchers. Its front wheels were a bit flat. It had a wooden box on its back with some words painted on it, "Property of Mr John-Flank,
thieves will be prosecuted".
Inside Mr John-Flank asked the butcher for some chicken fillets, the butcher replied "Sorry, only got a full chicken!" Mr John-Flank said nothing for a while, then said "You got
any slabs of steak?"The butcher shook his head, then fuming Mr John-Flank stormed out, climbed into his car, slammed it closed. He turned the key and realised he had run out of
petrol.

This Now and Then photo and story was created in an ABC Open NSW North Coast workshop (abc.net.au/open) in partnership with the Brunswick Valley Historical Society and the Northern Rivers Writers' Centre (NRWC). Courtesy of the NRWC workshop participants were guided through the writing task by author Alan Close who invited the group to imagine themselves into their Then photos. The result is this creative collection of Now and Then "the story as I imagine...."
