White on White

PCA: Black on Black/White on White

Photograph a black object against a black background or a white object against a white background. The key to this assignment will be on how to maneuver all your camera settings! It puts into practice how to adjust the AV, EV, shutter speed, ISO, lighting etc. to create a photograph with focused edges of the object so that it does not get lost in the background. Hint: lighting is key…

WT: We had a cold snap in the last couple of weeks. One very chilly morning, (I think it was around -20 C), I took my "good" camera to the barn. We had a fog that night and then the sun came out. What a glorious day! It was also a miracle as my battery had been flashing before I left the house and then I was out in the battery killing cold too!

This shot was a bit of an afterthought as I wondered to the car. It was the second last shot I took. I was aiming for this assignment and isolating the same colour of white as the background was tough while minimizing shadows behind it. I wanted it to stand out on it's own through focus primarily. In post, I did a minor crop off the bottom, ACR to colour and sharpness. In PSE, I played with the levels to make it brighter. I find I tend to shoot bright subjects darker to ensure I get the edges I want.
