Bothwell Auction Brill open horsecar
On November 11, 2017 Bonhams auctioned off the famed Bothwell Collection, most notable for its vintage automobiles but also containing five horse-drawn streetcars and a 36" steam locomotive. I'm guessing that the horsecars were likely acquired from the movie studios by Lindley Bothwell. He also leased them back to the studios, this one appeared in "Hello Dolly", dressed up as a New York horsecar. It is a standard gauge Brill 6-bench open air car, currently lettered as "Central Railway Company".
The collection was housed on the Bothwell Ranch in the Woodland Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles. I had known about it for many years, but had never seen it in person. For the auction everything had been cleaned up and most things were moved outside of their storage barns so that everyone could have a proper look. It was certainly a memorable event to attend- and no I didn't buy any cars or full-size trains, just a few toy train goodies!
