Signals at LAJ/UP crossing DSCF6845

One for the signal aficionados- these interesting old signals are still in use at the UP / BNSF (former LA Junction) diamond along Downey Rd., just south of Hobart Tower. The diamond is just to the right out of the photo.

The two heads are track occupancy indicators (aka Motor Car Indicators) and contain miniature semaphore indications, which you certainly don't see many of still in use. I assume they are (or were) used to indicate status on the SP track to LAJ crews who wanted to cross, but no doubt someone knows more precisely- info welcome.
