Pennsy DD1 at RR Museum of PA

Pennsy DD1 3936 (R) and K4 3750 (L) at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, 4/30/17.

A total of 66 DD1's were constructed by the Pennsylvania Railroad's Juniata Shops in Altoona starting 1909. These DC- powered units hauled passenger trains into Manhattan and Long Island from the opening of Pennsylvania Station and the New York Terminal tunnels. Following the arrival of the successor L-5 class beginning in 1927, 16 DD1's were transferred to the Long Island Railroad, where they operated in both freight and passenger service. More units followed, but ultimately they outlived the L-5s, which were withdrawn in 1942. Two of the DD1s remained in service into the 1960s, and this one was eventually preserved at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania.

More information on the remarkable DD1's can be found in William Middleton's "When the Steam Railroads Electrified", Also check out this really cool history of Pennsy's New York Terminal project on the Railroad Postcards blog: railroadpostcards.blogspot.com/2015/11/new-yorks-pennsylv...
