NYC S-Motor postcard
New York Central "S-Motor" postcard. Built by ALCO-GE between 1904 and 1909, these pioneering electric passenger engines lasted into the Conrail era, the last being retired in 1981. They also inspired many a Lionel, Ives, American Flyer and other toy train engines.
Sadly I never saw them in action, but several are preserved including at the Illinois Railway Museum and the Museum of Transport in St. Louis. Being 660 volt DC powered, one can dream of seeing one operating some day at IRM!
Scan of a postcard in my collection.
