Pennsy DDI RR Museum of PA PA070436

"In the belly of the beast". Inside the Pennsy DDI at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania. Each unit had one of these very large electric motors that drove the driving wheels through a jackshaft and driving rods. You can see the top of the jackshaft through the open cover on the end of the motor. Power was provided by the 650 VDC third rail.

 

Must have been something to be here inside the engine compartment when one of these things was running at speed!
