Penns Landing Philadelphia 10-89 3

Red Arrow "80 Car" on Philadelphia's Penn's Landing Trolley in 1989. This operation used an electrified 1.1 mile stretch of Conrail's waterfront freight trackage along Delaware Avenue.

The operation was run by the Buckingham Valley Trolley Association (BVTA) from 1982 to 1995. The group later relocated its collection to the Electric City Trolley Museum in Scranton, PA, part of the Steamtown National Historic Site.

Today, the track is still in place in the middle of Christopher Columbus Blvd. (as this stretch of Delaware Ave was renamed) but in general the area where the trolley ran has become a lot less industrial and a lot more people friendly. The maritime museum is still there (note the tall masts just to the right of the car), but now there's also some new residential developments, and public realm improvements such as new sidewalks, public art, and quite a bit of landscaping, encouraging people to stroll along the water side of the boulevard. There's even talk of putting in a trolley line!
