SAMARA:
Birch Polypore - Piptoporus betulinus - Razor Strop Fungus
Although edible the mushroom is a bit bitter and is usually used as a medicinal tea as it takes in Betulenic acid from the host tree. It is strongly antiseptic, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, anti fungal and also has the ability to strengthen the immune system and has been shown to help the immune system recognise and destroy cancer cells.
The underside of the mushroom can be cut into strips and used as a plaster as it is porous, antiseptic, anti fungal and sticks to itself.
The common name refers to the mushroom being cut into flat strips and attached to a wooden board which is then used to hone cut throat razors by barbers.
When dry the mushroom can be used to catch a weak spark and will smoulder for a long time so can be used to transport fire.
