Stagecoach in South Wales 27696
31/07/2015. ADL Enviro 300 CN60 CVP is pictured here passing Blaenavon Ironworks on service X24 from Newport.
Established in 1789, Blaenavon Ironworks was crucial in the ability to use cheap, low quality, high sulphur iron ores worldwide. It was also the site of experiments by Sidney Gilchrist Thomas and his cousin Percy Gilchrist. This led to the 'Basic Steel Process".
Iron rails produced in Blaenavon were exported worldwide to locations such as India, Brazil and Russia. They were also used locally in the construction of Crumlin Viaduct.
Finally ceasing production in 1904, the forges were later briefly used for steel in both World Wars. The site also featured in the BBC television series 'Coal House' where three families experienced life in the 1920's.
The X24 is due to be upgraded to the Stagecoach Gold specification with the arrival of 15 '65' plate Cummins Enviro 300's.
