Were once the S-Bahn station Lehrter Bahnhof stood, a complete new area developed with the new Central Station in the middle with a North-South line in a tunnel as well. The East-West as seen is the S-Bahn with DR transit railway (Interzone Züge) and by the time with Bahnhof Zoo as central point boarding trains towards West Germany. West Berlin for years was a complete sealed of isle by East Germany (DDR). The reunification made a huge project like this one feasible. The old Lehrter S-Bahnhof situated in the borough Tiergarten, the new Hauptbahnhof is part of the borough Berlin Mitte and meanwhile connected tot the tramway network.
