A Christmas Visitor - Day242/365

I swear this was how close he let me get, and he wasn't fazed in the slightest! No Photoshop except for lightening the photo a bit as it was late afternoon.

This is one of my favourite native Australian birds...The Kookaburra. He was about 30cm in height including his tail. His mate was sitting close by on some phone wires. They usually go in pairs.

The Kookaburra is instantly recognisable in both plumage and voice.Their voice sounds like laughter. The laughing Kookaburras are found throughout eastern Australia. They can grow up to 45cm from beak to tail.

Kookaburras feed mostly on insects, worms and crustaceans, although small snakes, mammals, frogs and birds may also be eaten. Prey is seized by pouncing from a suitable perch. Small prey is eaten whole, but larger prey is killed by bashing it against the ground or tree branch. It is one of the larger members of the kingfisher family.
