Pontillan Warhost, Tales of Old
Pre-conquest; left to right: Taluqlar horse archer (2x), levy spearman (in the back), hussar (2x), Grand Duke Basil "the Mad Lord" with personal sigil and Duchess Vylla, infantryman (2x), dismounted noble knight, handgunner
There are many explanations for the origin of the country's name of Pontilla. The natives call their country 'Pontaulis': the Land under the Sky(-God Taule), while the Northern Kingdoms refer to it as 'Terra Pontilla': the Land by the Sea, or some even claiming it refers to its position as a bridgehead between the northern and southern kingdoms of the continent.
Whichever the case, it is testament to Pontilla's varied history and culture. On the periphery of many different spheres of influence, Pontilla is a melting pot of peoples all formed into one defiant Grand Duchy. For if one would use only one word to describe the Pontillan nature, "defiance" would be it. A hardy people shaped by the harsh environment, with long cold winters and short but sunny summers.
Pontilla can be roughly split up into three main parts, which are then further divided into smaller duchies and marches. In the northeast one finds the Heartland, dominated by mountain ranges in the east which slowly sink into the earth the more you go west. There they give way to rolling hills and plains. The western end of Pontilla is characterized by the final stretches of the Great Northern Steppe, which is only sparsely populated mainly by semi-nomadic horse tribes. Finally, in the southeast of the country, beyond the mountain ridges there is the Darkwood, close to the Varcosian border. Also called Tenebriya, this area is infamous for the eponymous Darkwood: a nigh-impenetrable ancient forest that serves as a natural border with Varcosia.
The varied nature of Pontilla's geography and people is reflected in its army, which the core of men raised in the eastern parts are more akin to the troops wielded by the Northern Kingdoms, but augmented by troops raised amongst the horse peoples in the west. Together they form a small, but efficient army specializing in hit-and-run tactics and ambushes. When it does come to pitched battle, the Pontillans are known to employ wagenburg tactics to defend themselves from the powerful charge of enemy knights.

The draft for Pontilla's background has been around in a near-finished state for a while now. I should get around to finally finishing it and adding it to Jameis' Guide.
