Why S2?
nikon D600
nikkor 50 1.4G
why another S2?
I thought long and hard on this one. I had my sights on a Leica M3/summarit combo, as it would have completed my rangefinder set.
It came down to money. Leica glass is not inexpensive. Of course you are paying for the name but they also take beautiful pictures. Too beautiful. Maybe even sterile.
The SC Nikkor, this lens has character. Soft wide open, you are only a stop away from crispy edges. I like it.
The S2 also has a 1:1 viewfinder which I like and am used to.
I was able to hold a snap a M3, and yes it was like holding the Grail, but on the other hand, it didn't knock my socks off.
The M3 would have given me great shots, but could it give me anything I can't get now?
What the M3 cannot give me is those wonderfully soft night images; then again maybe it can but I really don't have the cash to try all that glass.
The S2 is one quirky camera for sure but the glass is cheaper!
I'll be straight and say that I'm still wondering what the the fuss is over the M3, and next year I may think about it again.
Then again, I've also had my eyeball on a Nikon SP...
All in all, it's still a bit lame to spending all this hard earned cash on a film camera!
I like my S2 and I suppose it will be a while until I join the Leica club.
