Tomb of Saint Dominic

The Sarcophagus was commissioned from Nicola Pisano, in 1264, and it is believed that he himself carved some of this panel, though it was mostly executed by his assistants Lapo di Ricevuto and Arnolfo di Cambio. It shows scenes from the saint's life:

On th eleft hand side St. Dominic resurrects the young Napoleone Orsini, after a fatal fall from his horse. The carving of Saint Dominic, leaning in, is attributed to Arnolfo di Cambio.

On the right is a scene from Dominic’s preaching against the Albigensians. The heretics threw a book, given to them by Dominic to correct their "errors", into a fire, but the flames rejected the book without injury.

On the right corner, partially obscured by a candle is St. Dominic with the Book and the Scourge. St Paul stands on the left corner, again partially obscured, while in the middle is the crowned virgin holding Jesus.

Above, but scalped in my picture(!) stand four of the great patron saints of Bologna, carved two centuries later. From the left: Saint Francis of Assisi, San Petronio, Saint Dominic and Saint Florian. San Petronio, holding his basilica was completed by Michaelangelo.
