The woman is chasing a fox that has stolen her bird . Possibly the fox is the one in the Nun's Priest's Tale, Russel (or Rossell in other versions) who was son of Reynard the Fox. However problems with foxes would have been well within the experience of the carvers. More interesting is the foxy lesson going on to left and right. Manchester foxes were clearly advanced at the start of the 16th century. For further discussion of this scene see:
