Outlook with a story - a view from St Nicholas Bell Tower, Prague

This view is the reward for climbing the bell tower adjacent to the Baroque Church of St Nicholas. The tower also served as a fire watchtower and, remarkably, was used during the cold war as an observation post for the State Security Service for monitoring the Western embassies in the surrounding area.

The baroque belltower, as well as the adjacent to St Nicholas Church, was designed and built by

Kilian Ignaz Dientzenhofer and was finished in 1752 (official date of completion is usually given as 1755).

This picture was taken on the very top from the former observation post of State Security Service (STB, Státní Bezpečnost), although it’s fair to say that their main concern was the embassy of the USA (not shown here).
