In BR days, class 9 was the designation for unfitted very slow freights. Since the elimination of those lumbering freights, class 9 was resurrected for trains that couldn't be more different.
Used for what are essentially class 1 trains, on the WCML they designate VWC trains via Birmingham. Here 9M52, Virgin West Coast’s 0852 Edinburgh – Euston Voyager, speeds down Shap Bank on 14 May 2019.
