A Parliament of Rooks.

Low Row on a frosty 8 December 2008.

Viewing the points of interest from left to right; first and foremost the tall and handsome up home semaphore signal protecting Low Row Level Crossing. The post for this signal is not a common type, a tubular upper section which in turn is mounted on a welded steel box frame stem.

Next, the “Bobby” watches over the scene from his fine NER signalbox. Then there’s 156484, the 1134 Carlisle – Newcastle which is about to rattle over the level crossing - above which - a parliament of rooks provide a sense of impending doom. Beyond the crossing, the up starter is off and over on the right hand side of the tracks - on its right hand bracket – is the down home.

Immediately below that down signal can be seen its replacement colour light signal and below that the disc ground signal, for wrong direction working over the crossing and crossover. Surrounded by scaffolding on the right of the picture the new Low Row signalling centre is nearing completion.
