Tale of the tail lamp

68016 “Fearless”, 68018 “Vigilant” and 68017 “Hornet” head for Sellafield on 7 June 2017 with a single intermediate nuclear waste container mounted on a PFA. The train is 6C50, the 0130 departure from Crewe Coal Sidings and is passing through Parton.

The front of the train is adjacent to what at first glance looks like a signal but is in fact a CCTV camera. It is used by the signaller in Bransty ‘box to carry out an observation previously done by the signaller in Parton ‘box, prior to its closure in 2010. The signaller at Bransty must check that the up train is complete after vacating the single line section between Parton South and Parton North junctions by observing its tail lamp. Only then can the signaller clear Bransty’s advanced down starter located at the end of Parton station’s down platform or the up home located at Cunning Point, three miles north of the ‘box.
