Lessons Learnt?

The aftermath of the accident in the early hours of Saturday 1 March 2008 where containers, shed by a northbound Freightliner (4S83) lie scattered all over the permanent way. This view is looking north with Hardendale Sidings in the foreground and the main lines to the left. On the extreme left of the picture a buckled OLE support stanchion can be seen.

The RAIB established the cause to be the spigots on FEA flats that did not comply with UIC standards - combined of course with strong winds. Freight operators were advised to review the use of the spigots and consider mitigation of risk in high winds. It appears that little - if anything - changed, as the incident has been repeated several times since, including one seven years later, where a box was blown off a train just down the track from here at Scout Green .
