Last Cumbrian Coal Train.

The last Cumbrian coal to be moved by train was centred on a trial at the Port of Workington, where local opencast coal was blended with imported product. Evidently it was not a success and only two or three trains actually ran. One thing the experiment did achieve though, was to extend the era of Cumbrian coal trains into the 100 te bogie hopper age. Here 66544 passes Siddick on its approach to Workington with 4Z40, the the 1025 from York Holgate on 12 September 2002.

Freightliner would again bring coal trains to the Cumbrian coast in 2014/15 but that coal was not mined in the county, it was simply passing through.
