forerunner
St. Bees station on the morning of 27 January 2012 as 37423 arrives with 2T20 "The Sellafield Special". This was a forerunner of the much anticipated Northern Trains' locomotive hauled services in 2015. At the time of writing the same locomotive (37423) is currently a regular on the 2015 training runs, but that's not why I uploaded the shot. I uploaded it because it shows the signaller exchanging tokens with the DRS crew on the end of the platform as the train pulls slowly past. This was the best place for the signaller, so he or she could nip back over the footbridge, especially if a down train was waiting in the opposite platform. I was at St Bees recently hoping to try a similar shot but observed that signallers are no longer doing this, they have to go to the other end of the platform.
