WINTER NIGHT COLD AND LONELY

(THERE WAS A TIME MANY MOONS AGO, I SPENT FIVE YEARS IN THIS SMALL CAMPER BY THE GRAND MOSQUE, IN FREEZING WINTERS AND SIZZLING SUMMERS, SEEKING PLEASURE OF RAHMAN)

Despair slips closer on little rat feet

Simpering and snickering,

Nipping at my fingers

Nesting between my toes.

‘Twas not my plan, I murmur

To the empty night.

I would have tender smiles

And a gentle lover’s caress,

Quiet comfort before the dying fire.

I slip closer to my final surrender:

Such is my fate, I whisper sadly.

It has all come to this.

"It's enough," I whisper to myself;

Then, through the open door and into the cold night.
