500 word essay (image is Polonski's work)

For my A2 Art coursework, I chose a personal theme which I named, “Hidden Turmoil”. I began by choosing artists work that inspired me; I first found Julia Polonski and Peter White at an exhibition called “Art in Action”. I chose Polonski’s work because not only do I admire her techniques using charcoal, I am interested in the hidden meanings behind her work. I have seen White’s work at Art in Action and many of White’s images are created in a similar fashion; this inspired me to work in a similar way to his work because it links with my theme of broken, hidden turmoil, conflict, insecurities and hidden emotions etc. In my own work, I was encouraged to pick simple objects that have been neglected or broken to create simplistic images that show hidden turmoil and hidden emotions by the techniques I use. It also inspired me to use dark colours and shading to create a negative atmosphere and use harsh and quick strokes to add to the texture and tone. From analysing White’s work, I have learned that I can present different emotions and feelings by changing texture, colour, technique and media. I’ve also learned to manipulate the tone, mood and atmosphere that the audience feel, for example, darkening my shading or adding a dark, bland background I can make the image look hostile, lonely and disturbing or if I were to use smooth, gentle brush strokes when painting and lighter colours, the audience will feel calmer and more uplifted. I have used what I have learned in my own work to display different emotions in objects to symbolize broken lifestyles and hidden emotions that people feel; this helped my personal investigation. The most successful aspects of my project were the pieces of mum and dad on their wedding day, the sketch of mum and objects in my sketchbook and my final piece, these images turned out to be the most visually intriguing and to be the ones that triumphantly expressed hidden turmoil due to the mark making and composition. Less successful parts of my project was a biro drawing of mum and an acrylic painting in my sketchbook of mum, these pieces I feel, showed the least skill and relevance to the project, the biro drawing lacked originality and the painting in my sketchbook had no sense of form or depth. To improve on my project I would continue to work on the pieces I feel are at a lower standard until they show better skill. I would also like to develop the project on the ‘possessions’ topic and add to the perfume bottle pieces because the possessions were a very personal aspect of the project and I think the way in which I experimented with prints and ink was a really effective way to get messages across to my audience. I’d also like to improve by using more types of medium that I am unconfident with such as biro, watercolour and pastel, I think improving my skills in these areas could have improved my whole project by showing a range of experiments with different media’s.
