Black Pool
This is a shot from Black Pool Hot Spring in Yellowstone National Park. The hot spring has a very color travertine which empties into the West Thumb portion of Yellowstone Lake. The Milky Way aligns quite well with this hot spring, although occasionally intense steam makes photography around the hot spring quite difficult. Doing shots of a wide area like this really require a wider angle lens that I usually shoot with, I rented the 20mmS for this trip so I could minimize the number of exposures needed to execute these shots due to the steam making extensive panorama stitching much more difficult. I'm generally not a fan of such a wide angle lens, you lose substantial amounts of detail, but the overall image with this lens pared with the Z7 still gives some amazing overall compositions.
4 exposures went into this image, shot with a Nikon Z7 and Nikkor 20mm f1.8S lens on a Sky Watcher Star Adventurer tracking mount. Sky exposures are 4 minutes at f2.8 and ISO 800, foreground exposures are 4 minutes at f1.8 and ISO 1600.
