Spes Ndayisenga, a small holder farmer, holds a handwritten sign saying: We ask world leaders to invest in us" Kibumbwe, Gitaramuka Commune, Karusi Province, Burundi.

Karusi province is one of the poorest provinces in Burundi and affected by recurrent food shortage, malnutrition and under-nutrition. Most people in the area are subsistence farmers but many families fail to grow enough food to support themselves as Burundi is very hilly and only the bottom of valleys have enough running water to sustain fertile soil and good crops.

The area is hilly and green, but since the war began in 1993-2002 the weather conditions have changed dramatically and the livelihood situation has been extremely difficult. Deforestation during the war resulted in erosion and depleted soil and unpredictable weather during the two annual wet seasons with heavy rain followed by drought and sudden hailstorms. Reforestation is taking place and is visible everywhere. Never the less, food shortage is a fact.

The ActionAid HungerFREE campaign highlights that the number of hungry people is set to reach over 1 billion by the end of this year. Rural women are a vital - yet seldom seen - part of the solution to this crisis.
