Channel Islands, Jersey, Lillie Langtry (1853-1929) by John Everett Millais
Famed for her beauty and pure complexion, Lillie was born on the Island of Jersey and later moved in Society and the Royal circle of the Prince of Wales (alledgedly his mistress). She became known as the 'Jersey Lily' on the strength of Millais' portrait, although the guide books tell us that the flower she holds is a Guernsey lily, not the Jersey variety. The picture was shown at the London Royal Academy in 1878 to great acclaim.
