Virgin and Child with musical Cherubs, by the St. Bartholomew Master c.AD 1495

The Virgin prepares to suckle the naked child Christ, to the accompaniment of a group of winged Cherubs playing various musical instruments and a choir in the background.

Instruments include a portable organ, viol, finger bells, a recorder, harp, lute - and a Cherub sprinkling flowers. The symbolism of the flowers in the painting is a specialist subject.

'The Master of the Saint Bartholomew Altarpiece' was a leading painter in Cologne, known for an altarpiece which is now in the Alte Pinakothek, Munich

Oil paint on wood.
