Julius Caesar, tapestry depicting a scene from his life, Flemish work, 16th-17th century
The central design, with Julius Caesar and two colleagues rejecting the advances or advice of a Sorceress or Fury or a Sybil holding a lighted torch, is in keeping with the themes of sets of tapestries which were popular in the mid 16th century and later, showing scenes from the life of Julius Caesar. The English King Heny VIII had such a set. Most have since been widely dispersed around Europe and America.
Another version of this scene now in the Museo Nationale del Castel S. Angelo, Rome, more clearly shows Spurina the soothsayer warning Caesar to be on his guard.
