Marble statue of a God, Hero or Athlete, Roman period c.AD 1st cent.
The finely-proportioned figure stands with weight on his right leg, leaning on a tree trunk, a cloak thrown over his left shoulder.
Speculation that he is an athlete or the god Hermes or the hero Achilles is inconclusive. Probably a Roman copy after a Greek original of the 5th-4th cent. BC.
Formerly Farnese Collection, Naples, acquired 1864.
