Corfu, Kerkyra: Old Town and Citadel - World Heritage Site
Descending into John Capodistrias Airport, the flight path sometimes passes over the Old Town. The Citadel (Old Fort, Twin Peaks) with massive walls and bastions juts out into the sea. Castles once crowned the two high points, and in late medieval times the town was located on this headland.
The Palace of St. Michael and St. George, built during the period of the British Protectorate of the (seven) Ionian Islands (1814-64) is at the left of the green grass square, an open space where cricket and other activities take place. The terracotta tiles and old buildings, many survivals from some 400 years of Venetian presence on the island, give the Old Town its special character.
The anniversary of the end of the British Protectorate and amicable hand-over of the Ionian Islands to Greece in 1864, was celebrated this year.
