Lunds Valley, ND

X-POWEGE is on the pull, over hill and dale at a creep of a crawl with an empty grain train headed back to rotation along the BNSF system.

Though barely a century old, the Grenora Sub has already swelled and faltered, like so many other Great Plains branchlines. The nearly sixty miles of rail west of Powers Lake to the sub's namesake of Grenora has been abandoned and pulled up since the early 2000s, while the 25 or so remaining miles between the mainline at Stanley and the current end of the line near Powers Lake last saw revenue in the early 2010s.

The pickup and stock trailer passing the ancient wooden elevator in the background would come across the small convoy of out of state plates near Kittelson Slough, and its driver would pause for a moment to check out the riff-raff. During the exchange the rancher mentioned his presence on this land for the past fifteen years, and remarked that this particular day was the first time he'd ever seen a moving train on the slow and weedy line.
