What Makes it Special:

Early sign reflectivity was restricted to button copy 'cat eye' letters, leaving the rest of the sign struggling to be seen by the weak beam of light thrown by old sealed-beam car headlights of yore. To improve the visibility of signs, freeway gantries often carried rows of mercury vapor lamps that shined up at guide signs at night to improve their visibility while on city streets and country roads, down lights such as these would have done the same job using incandescent bulbs. Their usage would have been restricted to dangerous corners or areas where motorists seeing the sign well in advance was critical. Companies like Marbelite and Crouse-Hinds made down lights very similar to this one which was made by Pelco only this year. In fact, it was made specifically for me and to my order, powder-coated gloss black and specified with the optional diffusing lens. It's unlikely these will continue to be made for much longer so I decided it would be fun to add one to the collection while they're still out there for the getting.

The NO LEFT TURN sign originally served in New Philadelphia, Ohio and was acquired legally.
