Harlequin Ducks
.......or Histrionicus Histrionicus, the duck with two first names.......March 5, 2010.......male and female,about 20 meters away, hanging around the Little Qualicum River Esturary area with the other thousands of birds shown below during the annual Herring Spawn.........
.........I believe that many of those tiny little black dots you may be able to see way out there about a km or so, in the third photo down below, are Surf Scoters with bunches of Black Brant, Goldeneyes, etc., etc..........and thousands of gulls........
.........Poecile05 stands out in rain, hail, snow and gale force winds almost daily to perform official counts and says about 20,000 gulls are hanging around the Qualicum/Parksville area.........has done an excellent flickr photo summary of the Herring spawn and related phenomena in the last week...........
