Fixed

.......finally got around to posting this Nikon Canada invoice for the Nikon D50 group discussion.............might be of some small help to folks with the same problem........my D50 failed back in February just after the 2 year warranty expired......the local Nikon service centre was fairly fast (4 weeks to fix-I dropped it off and picked it up)

.......they indicate on the invoice (bigger) that they replaced the shutter and aperature control unit and were nice enought to clean the CCD sensor, all for $200 bucks Canadian........:-(

.......the original problem as summarized here below.....

It may be helpful for someone else to see the symptoms and to know that this happened on a cold, damp (no rain) foggy day - maybe something to be avoided if damp air can permeate the camera and affect the electronics.

Summary of possible shutter failure - Nikon D50

- damp, cold, foggy day (no rain)

-using nikon 18-135mm lens

- took two photos OK, then shutter seemed to seize up and would no longer release when shutter button pushed

- the 2 photos taken were recorded to SD disk successfully and could be downloaded directly from camera with nikon transfer via USB

- battery was fully charged

- subsequently, pushing shutter release makes quiet clicking sound as if trying to release but is not successful (in auto or manual positions)

- mirror is stuck in the up position

-shutter curtain is closed and appears normal

-mirror lock-up function in the menuing is greyed out

-all other menus appear normal and functioning

-Err message flashes on top display when camera is turned on or shutter release button is pressed

-top display is normal otherwise

-menu reset does not help

-pushing reset button on bottom of camera does not help

-removed battery for 2 weeks does not help

-recharging battery (using regular Nikon battery) does not help

-cleaning battery contacts does not help

-cleaning lens contacts or using a different lens does not help

-I have babied the camera and changed lenses infrequently

-

- 2 year D50 warranty expired December 10, 2008

- the Opanda exif reader program indicates that there may have 9296 shutter activations todate
