The continuous control lines work well, although they do need splicing together properly.
The black and red lines are righting lines. The black loop provides a sound foot loop when the boat is inverted (rather than trying to get a foothold on the gunwale) and the red line has a loop which hangs down in the water and allows easy re-entry to the boat once it is righted. The loops and knots also provide handholds and grip when the boat is upside down or on its side. It is a simple modification which is worth its weight in gold when you capsize...especially in a race as it makes recovery so much quicker.
