The Bastille Monument

Located in the Place de la Bastille - The Colonne de Julliet dominates the plaza. It marks the site of the prison known as the Bastille which was stormed by the mob in 1789 at the start of the French Revolution. I was sitting at a cafe having a glass of wine when I took this picture.

The July column is based on a circular pedestal of white marble. This base has the shape of the circular basin that had been achieved under the First Empire to host a fountain with a sculpture of an elephant in the middle. A model of plaster was installed, but the final sculpture was never carried out because of lack of funds because of wars. Victor Hugo evokes this model in Les Miserables.
