Horse & Jockey

The Horse & Jockey pub by the River Hamble @Curbridge, Hants. In August 1932 an 11 foot 'whale' weighing 10 hundredweights got stuck under the nearby bridge. Unlike the efforts made to try to save the whale that strayed recently up the Thames, the locals soon secured this whale with ropes and shot it. Apparently it was a Sunday and the Chief Medical Officer allowed the villagers to preserve the fish over Sunday and charge people 2d (two old pennies) to view the slaughtered 'whale'. The local paper recorded that over 5000 people paid up – amounting to over £20 – a considerable sum in those days.
