I lived in a Basement flat in N16 in the 60's and 70's till I was 11.
The features that came with a Privately Rented subterranean basement flat in my experience back then were: The Garden, a lack of natural light, very big spiders, mice, A coal cupboard, a tin bath, an outside toilet and rising damp. We had a full length patterned glass front door with wrought iron fixed inside against it to add to our security.
